Know before you overspend

A budget is a monthly ceiling for your whole organization or for one allocation group. It is checked every day against the billed cost already imported.

Creating a budget

Under the organization's Costs tab. Only owners and admins can change budgets.

The budget form: name, monthly amount, scope, alert thresholds and forecast.
Budgets of the month: spend against each ceiling, forecast and alert thresholds.
Name and amount
A recognisable name and the monthly amount, in USD, that spend should not exceed.
Scope
The whole organization's billed cost, or only the share of one allocation group (cost center).
Alert thresholds
The percentages of the amount at which owners and admins are alerted. The default ladder is 50, 80, 90 and 100 percent.
Forecast
Warns you when the end-of-month projection goes over the amount.
Pause
A paused budget keeps its history but sends no alerts.

Following them

Costs → Budgets
Month-to-date spend against each ceiling, which budgets are close to their limit and which are forecast to be exceeded.
One alert per threshold
Each threshold alerts once per month, and every month starts clean.
Needs billing data
Budgets use real billed cost, so they only work for providers that report billing. See Cost Aggregation.
Where alerts go
Through the channels each person enabled for Budget alerts in their notification preferences.
